GAP stands for Guaranteed Asset Protection. It covers the difference โ the "gap" โ between what your car is worth and what you still owe on your loan if the vehicle is totaled in an accident or stolen. Without GAP coverage, your standard auto insurance pays out only the car's actual cash value (ACV) at the time of the loss. If you owe more than that, you're responsible for the remaining balance โ on a car you no longer have.
For example: you owe $22,000 on your loan, but the car is only worth $17,000 when it's totaled. Your insurer pays $17,000. You still owe $5,000 to your lender. GAP insurance covers that $5,000.
GAP insurance is most important when your loan balance exceeds your car's value โ meaning you're "underwater" or "upside down." This is most common in the first two to three years of a loan, especially when:
If your loan balance is already below your car's value, GAP insurance is unnecessary. You're already in positive equity territory.
The cheapest place to buy GAP coverage is through your existing auto insurance company as an endorsement on your policy. Most major insurers charge $20 to $60 per year for this coverage โ you can cancel it the moment your loan balance drops below your car's value.
The most expensive place is the dealership finance office, where GAP is often presented as a $400 to $800 lump sum rolled into your loan. This means you're paying interest on the GAP premium itself for the full loan term, and canceling it for a refund can be a complicated process.
The time you spend underwater depends on your down payment, loan term, interest rate, and how fast your specific vehicle depreciates. Popular trucks and SUVs (Toyota Tacoma, Ford F-150, Jeep Wrangler) depreciate slowly and may reach positive equity faster. Luxury sedans and certain electric vehicles depreciate more steeply, extending the underwater period.
The calculator above estimates your break-even point based on your current balance, remaining term, and the depreciation rate you select. Use it as a planning guide โ the exact point will vary based on actual market conditions for your vehicle.
